The Nigeria Internet Group

The Nigeria Internet Group (NIG) is a non- governmental organization promoting and facilitating full Internet connectivity in Nigeria. The NIG was formed in March, 1995.

The objectives of the NIG include:
* Championing the establishment of a national gateway to register the ng domain of the Internet.
* Promoting access to the Internet in Nigeria
* Promoting national awareness of the Internet
* Promoting an intra-Nigeria Network
* Promoting the development of national archives and databases

Membership of the NIG attracts the following:
* Getting quarterly report from the Secretariat about the groups' activities
* Participation in the activities of the Group
* Eligibility for elective offices in the Group. NIG has the offices of the President, General Secretary
* Opportunity for discount in any workshop organized by the Group
* Since the ultimate goal of NIG is full access to the Internet, it is planned that NIG members enjoy some discounts from Service providers in one way or another.
* The NIG is trying to gather support for the establishment of a library where Information
Technology materials and Internet facilities will be made available at almost no cost to members. The library will be exclusively for members.

The activities of NIG have been coordinated since its inception by the Nigeria Internet Group (NIG) steering Committee headed by Chief O. C. Iromantu, the Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission.

The Internet Society


The Internet Society describes itself as an organization that "provides assistance and support to groups and organization involved in the use, operations and evolution of the Internet. It provides support for forums in which technical and operational questions can be discussed, and provides, mechanisms through which interested parties can be informed and educated about the Internet, its function, use, operation, and the interests of its constituents."

The Internet Society was created by many of the individuals and organizations responsible for the creation and evolution of the Internet. Although it has no official say or control over the Internet, the Internet Society tries to bring together the individuals and organizations that use the Internet, educate them about the Internet, and encourage them to be involved in the evolution of the Internet.

The Internet Society has over seven thousand individual members and more than 100 corporate members, from more than one hundred and fifty countries, all over the world.

* Receive a copy of On the Internet magazine (the international publication of the Internet Society which is a guide to the latest developments in, around and the Internet).
* Reduced fees for attendance at Internet Society conferences and other benefits

Nigerian IT Professionals in America (NITPA)
NITPA's mission is to use indigenous Nigerian professional skills to address Nigerian IT problems, thereby closing the digital divide.

The overall objectives and goals of NITPA include:

1. Networking (among members to generate synergy & promote IT entrepreneurship).
2. Advocacy (government policy influence and infusion of ideas to key IT and Diaspora agenda).
3. Project opportunity (seeking and directing same to interested members)
4. Consulting opportunities (seeking and directing same to members)
5. IT entrepreneurial and investment opportunities in Nigeria and the US.
6. Education (through summits, conferences, sponsored events, etc)

8. Mentorship (of budding Nigerian IT youth and newcomers to the field).
9. Mobilization of accessible IT human resources resident in the US for
purposes of technology transfer to Nigerian institutions (including educational, commercial and Civic institutions)
